Are You Using the Right Vacuum Brush?

Brush

If you own a quality vacuum cleaner, odds are that it came with a whole bunch of different attachments. While you may have had a hard time figuring out just what attachments fit in one place, there is actually more of a reason to have them than an expensive game of Perfection. The different brushes that came with your vacuum all have different purposes. Using the right brush for the right job gets the most out of your cleaning time and out of the vacuum itself. Use the right tool for the right job!

Turbo Brush

The turbo brush is a spinning brush that is powered by the suction of the vacuum pulling a small turbine connected to the brush. The spinning brush has bristles that should be used on carpeting because the motion of the brush loosens up dirt and debris that can get caught in carpeting. The brush makes it easier for the suction power of the vacuum to put them dirt into the bag and off the floor.

Turbo brushes are great for flat looped carpeting or area rugs. Longer carpeting can get snagged in the spinning brushes or cause the brush to stop spinning as the suction of the vacuum isn’t enough to keep the brush turning.

Powered Brushes

This is probably the most common brush for a vacuum. For some uprights it might be the only brush that you can use without going to the attachment hose. The powered brush can be powered by a small motor in the nozzle or by a belt that is attached directly to it from the motor. The brush is usually covered with stiff nylon brushes that can really get into the carpeting and pull up the dirt.

The powered brush is great for most types of carpeting. It can dislodge dirt and deep down dust in the carpet and can get through most pile of carpet. Powered brushes are also good at restoring carpet pile and getting your carpet looking like new.

Remember that the powered brush can cause damage to a hardwood floor so if you are going to use an upright on your hardwood, shut off the brush. The stiff bristles can leave scratches.

Hardwood Floor Brushes

If your home primarily has hardwood flooring, this is the tool for you. This is a flat brush with wheels on it that has soft and non-moving bristles. The soft bristles can be used to dust and polish your floor as the vacuum is used.

These brushes, as their name suggests are perfect for hardwood. They can also be used on tile and other hard flooring surfaces like linoleum. Since the brushes have no motion there is no danger of them damaging the finish of the floor or leaving scratches over time.
